Since development plans for Wimbledon Stadium in Plough Lane were approved a year ago, it’s been a waiting game to find out when the works would actually start. Now we learn from AFC Wimbledon, whose new stadium will rise from the ashes of the greyhound track, that demolition work is due to begin in April 2017.
Building work will continue through 2018, with the club’s first league match pencilled in for August 2019.
The draft plans were unveiled at a meeting AFC Wimbledon’s Dons Trust this week.
Full details of development plans for the Plough Lane site, which also includes a retail unit, revamped Christopher’s Gym, and housing development of more than 600 apartments, can be viewed on the Merton Council site here. According to the AFC Wimbledon website, their new HQ will incorporate “community facilities for local residents”.
