Bridge repairs mean that Ashcombe Road will be closed to traffic between Queens Road and the Cromwell Road turning some time later this month (probably!).
Warning of the two-month closure to traffic is posted on lamp posts either side of the Ashcombe Road bridge, stating a provisional date of March 6, 2017. But we have received verbal confirmation from Merton Council’s highways dept that works have been delayed.
They will not start on March 6, and a definitive date has not yet been set.
Be warned, Cromwell Road residents: traffic is likely to be heavier than usual when works start. However, given that HGVs are already banned from Ashcombe Road by weight restriction, it shouldn’t lead to a large number of extra lorries trundling past our homes.
We understand that motorist-friendly ‘diversion’ signs will be prominently displayed on the Gap Road/Ashcombe Road junction to help pre-warn motorists of the closure. There will however inevitably be an increase in traffic on the eastern ends of Haydon Park and Cromwell Roads, as well as Avondale Road, with vehicles using the diversion.
