Thanks to the concerned resident who sent us these rather alarming images of trees in the grounds of The Woodman pub in Durnsford Road.
The strips of bark have been removed in a professional way, in a process known as ‘girdling’ which, according to Wikipedia, is a surefire way of ensuring the tree dies from above that point. A dozen or so trees have been girdled in this way.
The Woodman is scheduled to close in the coming weeks, apparently with a view to it being demolished and replaced with – guess what? – a housing development.
UPDATE: we learn from MP Stephen Hammond that the pub is to be retained after all, and a tree preservation order has been issued. Good news, but not sure how that will help these trees?
