A deluge of extra work that has come with the introduction of the resident parking permit diesel surcharge means that Merton Council has doubled the grace period for expired permits.

Renewals for diesel vehicles now have to count as new applications in the council’s admin system, leading to an avalanche of extra work and the inevitable delays.

So if your permit has run out, don’t worry! Traffic wardens normally allow you a two-week period before fines are imposed, but that has temporarily been extended to four weeks.

(This was confirmed to us after a lengthy wait in a queue of telephone calls to the council’s parking department. Save yourself the bother. Note to Merton: if you put this piece of info on your parking info webpage it would save many people, including your own staff, a lot of time and effort…)
